Infoserve plans to exploit database

Many companies have tried to make money from selling online marketing services to companies but it has been tough to succeed in this market. Infoserve appears to have a model that could be more successful.

Infoserve has built up a database of 2.7m company records which is more than Thomson or Yell. More than 100,000 entries are updated each month. Infoserve makes this data available on its own and partner websites. It is also available on Sky
Interactive. Revenues come from telephone sales to the local businesses which pay to be higher up in the list of local suppliers/retailers for particular products. Hosting and website design services are also offered.

Infoserve raised £1.61m net at an unusual placing price of 41.15p a share. That values the whole company at £4m. It is losing money because it is still building up the business and taking on more telesales people.

In the first quarter of 2006 turnover was 685% higher at £618,000 and the loss was £670,000.
